The week passed calmly after the cattle theft. The sheriff discovered nothing new. Not even the PIs Devan hired. All they found were tire tracks on an adjacent road which faded when it reached the asphalt. They couldn’t have gone far, though. How could they take fifty-two heads at once without drawing attention? It was over one trip or more than one means of transportation.

The questions remained as did the investigations. Security was increased, but the answers would only come with time.

Saturday came and with it, the day of the party to celebrate the award we won that year. There was no way to invite everyone to the house so we organized a barbecue for the other employees, who didn’t get invited, near the cafeteria.

I stayed with my friends at the barbecue until the sun began descending. When I returned to the mansion, it was full. The veranda, the living room, and the front patio were scattered with guests.

There was everything from rich women in long dresses and fancy jewelry to people in jeans like me. Some were from the city and others from neighboring towns. Even my father was at the party. He was in a suit, and his wheelchair was near the couch where the nurse was talking to Lola. He looked around with a scrunched face. He was never much of a partier, and I was sure he’d soon demand to be taken to his room. Part of it was because of shame. I believed he couldn’t stand being seen that way when these same people once regarded him as this great farmer.

I smiled at the nurse and my father. He didn’t return the gesture. Dad was always in a foul mood, and after the accident, there was not much that cheered him up. It was as if he lived because he had no way to escape.

Lola wasn’t supposed to be working tonight, yet, she was checking on the catering staff we’d hired. Shaking her head with disapproval at something she noticed. She was about to follow a server when I flung an arm around her shoulders, stopping her in her tracks. “Let it be. Aren’t you supposed to be having fun?”

“Ah, yes. I’m having a blast,” she said with sarcasm. “I’m just here to make sure everything goes well.”

“From where I stand, everything seems impeccable.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’m ready for bed. And your father already wants to go to his room.”

“I figured as much. Do you want me to take you, Dad?”

“Ham…” he snarled, his blue eyes a little irritated. He pointed to the hall. “B-bed.”

“I’ll take you,” I said, going behind his wheelchair, and the nurse followed us to his room in the lower level of the house.

I set him up on the bed in his suite. From here, the noise from the party was inaudible. I took off his shoes, helped him undress, and got him into his pajamas. He pointed at the television and the nurse switched it on.

“Dad, do you want anything else?”

He shook his head, holding the remote control.
